QUICK TALK

Can I Be Direct? The Benefits of DC Microgrids

Date/Time: Tuesday, September 9, 2025 / 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM

Speaker: Luiz Huet de Bacellar, Vice President, Engineering and Technology, Eaton

Direct current (DC) microgrids offer a streamlined, efficient approach to integrating renewable energy technologies like solar panels, energy storage, and EV charging infrastructure. This session will explore the practical benefits of DC microgrids, including faster, easier, and more cost-effective deployment compared to traditional alternating current (AC) systems. Attendees will learn how fleet operators and industrial facilities are utilizing DC microgrids to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and lower operational costs. Through real-world case studies and insights from industry leaders, this session will provide actionable strategies for leveraging DC microgrids to build resilient, future-ready energy systems.

SPEAKING SESSION

The Trials and Tribulations of Designing and Commissioning a Microgrid

Date/Time: Wednesday, September 10, 2025 / 1:30 PM to 1:55 PM

Speaker: Bob Kirslis, Microgrid Solutions Manager, Eaton

Location: Storage Central Theater, CAESARS FORUM

Eaton has over 200MW of designing and installing microgrids, from this experience we will share our lessons learned throughout these projects.
This session will explore the decision-making process behind types of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to support your microgrid, how to ensure your microgrid is flexible and expendable, options for green field and existing sites to be retrofitted with microgrid systems. Strategies to maximize environmental and economic benefits while enhancing energy resilience, reliability, and sustainability. Lessons learned to reduce commissioning time.

SPEAKING SESSION

Technical, Regulatory and Financial Challenges of Microgrids to Simplify Decarbonization

Date/Time: Wednesday, September 10, 2025 / 5:00 PM to 5:25 PM

Speaker: Bob Kirslis, Microgrid Solutions Manager, Eaton

Location: Grid Edge Theater, CAESARS FORUM

Recent healthcare microgrid installations demonstrate how renewable energy sources help reduce emissions and fossil fuel reliance in a campus setting. Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) waivers allow microgrids to provide backup power to healthcare facilities, accelerating decarbonization as campuses electrify power systems. However, addressing technical, grid integration, regulatory and financial challenges is crucial for success. This session will explore the decision-making process behind centralized, decentralized and hybrid microgrids, and energy storage integration. Strategies to maximize environmental and economic benefits while enhancing energy resilience, reliability and sustainability will be explored. Financing models, evolving fuel cell and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technologies, and accommodating new electric loads like Electric Vehicles (EVs) will also be covered.

Unlock the energy transition

Energy flows through the grid in more directions and through more devices than ever before. That decentralization creates new complexities and potential for decarbonization. Everything as a Grid is our approach to reinventing the way power is distributed, stored and consumed. We’re creating flexible energy systems to power today and tomorrow—accelerating decarbonization, boosting resilience, reducing energy costs and creating new revenue streams.

Enabling the electrification of commercial buildings

The energy transition creates an enormous opportunity for building owners to manage power far more effectively. We’re accelerating this shift by making it easier to integrate renewables, energy storage and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Home as a Grid

Putting our Everything as a Grid strategy to work for homes creates smart energy systems that effectively manage energy production and consumption. Breaking traditional boundaries, we’re enabling far more flexibility in how and when electricity is used—lowering carbon footprint and advancing resilience at home.

Unleashing prosumers: homes become energy producers

For more than a century, power has flowed in one direction—from centralized power plants into homes. Today, there’s a new reality thanks to solar, electric vehicle charging, energy storage, digitalization and more. Homes can now act as energy hubs by producing their own power to help support flexibility and stability of electrical power.
